The long-awaited amendments to the Employment Relations Act and the Employment Rights Act will ultimately be revealed by Minister of Labour, Shakeel Mohamed. One innovation should be the creation of a Redundancy Board. This committee will include people independent. It will consider the case of employees who believe have been unfairly dismissed.
Unions had raised their voices against the Employment Relations Act and the Employment Rights Act. These laws allow an employer to dismiss an employee without giving reasons for its decision.
Note that the union of the Confederation of Private Sector Workers (CTSP) had, on several occasions, campaigned against the Labour Minister about it. They felt that the Ministry of Labour collaborated with the employers.
The Minister of Labour may also announce the introduction of a Portable Severance Allowance Fund. The union had suggested that this fund is supplied by the private sector to benefit employees. Upon dismissal, employees and benefit from some form of pension, the time to find another job.
More power could also be granted to the Commission for Conciliation and Mediation (CCM). Several union members had questioned the effectiveness of this commission, which they believe would just write reports without the recommended measures are implemented.
Workplace safety should not be overlooked. Important announcements should be made in this direction, in conjunction with the International Labour Day to be celebrated on April 28. Thus, employers will be obliged to present a "risk assessment" to staff.
