The Anti-Corruption Commission Awarded the United Nations Public Service Award

The United Nations Public Service Award was awarded to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), ranking first in the Africa for "her work effectively and responsibly." This organization is considered the most prestigious institution to make awards to public institutions.

This award comes at a time when the ICAC is the subject of criticism, especially by the opposition, which continues to claim that this institution is independent in name only. Warmest detractors of this institution, namely the opposition leader and former president, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, consider that the ICAC is a political instrument that serves the government and Prime Minister .

SAJ, while he was still president, had declared: "The ICAC pe fades." The opposition members also argue that if they return to power, they will not hesitate to dissolve this institution.

The ICAC had also suffered heavy criticism from U.S. Ambassador Cesar Cabrera. In any case it had revealed the information site Wikileaks online. Cesar Cabrera would have sent a confidential memo to Washington in June 2008 on the level of corruption in Mauritius. He believes that the ICAC officers owe their position to the Prime Minister, and that therefore they are forced to vow allegiance.
