The objective is to extend job-specific training to unemployed people aged between 16-30 years.
The scheme is currently applicable to employers operating in the hotel and tourism, construction and ICT sectors. Some 500 unemployed youth would be targeted in the first instance.
Director of the HRDC, Raj Auckloo highlighted that the implementation of the programme follows measures announced by the government in the budget speech 2012 to promote training for unemployed youth in Mauritius by encouraging relevant and practical pre-job training. “Through the programme, young people will be identified by the employers for training and employment and the duration of the training would be up to six month, following which the trainee would be offered a minimum of one year of employment,” he said.
The director also added that the HRDC will meet 60 per cent of the training and the remaining training cost would be met by the prospective employer.
