Mauritius Opens Bidding for Low-Cost Internet Service

In an effort to bridge the digital divide, Mauritius telecom regulator ICTA has launched a bidding exercise aimed at licensed ISPs capable of providing an affordable broadband service under the Universal Service Fund.

The bidding documents stipulate that the service must offer a 256 kbps connection with downloads capped at 2GB a month, for a monthly price of up to MUR 200 (appoximately USD 6.20). Licence winners will have to deploy the service by 1 January 2013 at the latest. The bidding exercise will close on 11 December.
