Criminal Appeal Amendment Bill: The Bill Passed Despite the Opposition
The opposition has already pushed through bills precipitously in the past. This is one of the arguments put forward by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, in response to criticism of the opposition during the debate on the Criminal Appeal Amendment Bill Wednesday, July 24.
In his speech later in the evening, he defended the bill by insisting on the provision of fresh and compelling evidence in the reopened investigation. New witnesses and new evidence will be presented, he said. Navin Ramgoolam also stressed that the DPP can appeal in any case, under this provision of the new law.
It " must have confidence in the Supreme Court , "concluded the Prime Minister after the Criminal Appeal Amendment Bill was passed around 22 hours.
Parliament was adjourned to October 22.
