920,000 New Identity Cards Ordered...
The Mauritius National Identity Scheme (ISMN) is a flagship project that will provide a more modern national identification system, secure and efficient Mauritians. This project will provide new highly secure ID cards and set up an infrastructure that will allow for more efficient and reliable transactions between citizens and government.

" The card will be valid for a period of 10 years," said Minister of Information Technology and Communication , Tassarajen Chedumbrum Pillay, during a press conference at the Hotel St. George on Thursday. The objectives are to provide a more secure for various government departments and non-government and open the way for the modernization and digitization of these services identification and authentication system .
" The fingerprints of 10 fingers will be taken but those two fingers of each hand will appear on the identity card . The chip is 80 kilobytes , "said Rao Ramah , Project Director of ISMN . The fingerprints will identify the holder of the card, making it virtually impossible for use by another person.
" Approximately 920,000 cards have been ordered but you may be going to receive a million cards by the end of September 2014. On September 2 , we will receive 15,000 cards. This project will cost Rs 1.1 billion to the state. The first card is free , but if you lose , you will make a payment to acquire another . Nearly 300 to 400 cards are lost every day. The offices of the Civil Status and Social Security will have a player that can read the data on the new maps . This unit is also available in the banks in the near future, " he said.
Ten conversion centers will be operational in Mauritius and two in Rodrigues. Four mobile units will be deployed throughout the country for vulnerable people who can not move to take the steps to get the card.
Seniors will now present their new ID card to travel. The ISMN will be launched in September. The official launch is scheduled for October. All Mauritians aged 18 or more will have their new electronic identity cards by the end of September 2014.
 The new card has many advantages , including a clear identification, secure and convenient . Citizens will no longer submit several documents to prove their identity in order to transact .
The photo of the person, the ID number , signature and data on marital status will be displayed at the front of the card while the bar code , date of issue, among others, appear on the back . Other data such as fingerprints and residential address will be stored on the chip .
