The Ministry of Industry hardens tone by introducing new regulations. Now, all imported, including goats and sheep livestock, will be controlled. When selling, it is imperative to know the age of the animal, if not, it will be an offense. All those who are found guilty of this act shall be liable to a fine of Rs 100,000 and a term of imprisonment not exceeding three years.

Imported livestock must not be less than 3 years. On sheep and goats, they should not be less than one year. The government introduced the new rules, because often they are animals toddlers who are killed. The officers of the Ministry of Commerce and those of the Consumer Protection Unit crisscross the four corners of the country to ensure that the rules are observed. In Mauritius, one company has the right to import animals from South Africa, Australia and Kenya. It then sells to individuals or butchers.
