District Councils Refuse to Lower the Trade Fee

District councils have faced large budget deficits. And increasing the Trade Fee is the only way to reduce believes Ved Golam, former president of the Association of District Councils. They have therefore decided to maintain the prices determined at the beginning of the year.

Despite the call by the Minister of Local Government, Hervé Aimée, so that local authorities are revising downward the Trade Fee , the Association of District Councils (ADC) maintain rates determined at the beginning of the year. This decision was unanimously approved by the members at a meeting Thursday night.

"Ved Golam whose term as President of the ADC ended Friday, said that the district councils had to facing large budget deficits, and increasing the Trade Fee is the only way to reduce them.

He emphasizes that traders villages have not complained about the increase, and that only those who must pay their taxes to local communities and the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) find that they are penalized. Traders that hold a license to sell alcohol must pay a further sum to the MRA, and hotel operators are taxed by the local authorities and the Tourism Authority.
