What we learnt from the new Game of Thrones trailer: Daenerys plans her domination, a new lesbian power couple, and is that Jorah?

What we learnt from the new GOT trailer
pic battle scenes, passionate embraces and dragons – the latest trailer for season seven of Game of Thrones manages to cram an impressive amount into less than two minutes. As always, the trailer raises more questions than answers – but here are just some of the things we’ve learned.

Cersei is watching her back, but is Jaime’s guard ending?

One thing that certainly hasn’t changed since last series is Cersei’s (Lena Headey) staunch belief that the world is against her. The beginning of the new trailer features the Lannister queen making an impassioned speech about all of her enemies, and filling the throne room with Lannister soldiers. Let’s face it, her paranoia is pretty well-founded. She’s not exactly popular with anyone. It even appears that the scales are continuing to fall from brother-cum-lover Jaime’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) eyes. A short close-up shows the King’s Guard member looking pretty uncomfortable with what is going on. Could he soon abandon his evil twin?

She also throws some serious shade at little brother Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) – declaring that she and Jaime are the only surviving Lannisters that matter.

Casterly Rock is under threat

While Cersei is jealously guarding the Iron Throne in King’s Landing, it looks as though the Lannister family seat of Casterly Rock is ripe for the taking. In the trailer, an archway adorned with the letter “L” and images of lions (the Lannister family symbol) is swarmed by what appear to be unsullied soldiers. It looks as though Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) could be posing a serious threat to her rival queen – and finally making progress after years of faffing across the narrow sea.

Game of Thrones could be getting their first lesbian couple

It is only very brief, but a snippet from the trailer shows the swashbuckling Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan) and elegantly seductive Ellaria Sand (Indira Varma) sharing a passionate kiss. The two met at the very end of season six when they joined Daenerys' plot to conquer Westeros. For Ellaria, it was all about avenging the grisly death of her lover Oberyn Martell by overthrowing Cersei – while Yara is more concerned with taking back the Salt Throne of Iron Islands, which had been taken by her sinister uncle Euron.

Then again, Yara would be advised to think twice before locking lips with Ellaria. Myrcella Baratheon died after Ellaria planted a kiss…which was laced with poison.

Game of Thrones has had numerous same-sex frissons, but these have mostly taken place in brothels. Renly Baratheon and Loras Tyrell (Gethin Anthony and Finn Jones) were famously in love, and the latter’s homosexuality was integral to season five and six’s plotline when he was imprisoned for his “sins”. However, there has yet to be a romantic plotline involving two female protagonists – could Ellaria and Yara be about to change this?

Missandei and Greyworm get much closer

In another very brief yet steamy snippet, Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) is seen ripping off Grey Worm’s (Jacob Anderson) top. The pair have shown a number of tender scenes as their friendship has grown over the years while both serving Daenerys. Missandei even nursed the military commander back to health after he was wounded in a skirmish. One potential problem with this romantic entanglement, however… one half of the couple is a eunuch. It also remains to be seen what Daenerys would think of two of her closest advisors getting together.

Daenerys is looking set to conquer Westeros

The Dragon Queen appears more determined than ever in the new trailer to take back her birth-right – the Iron Throne. Several shots show Daenerys at Dragonstone, the island where she was born and the family seat of the Targaryens. It was also the former base of recently deceased rival claimant Stannis Baratheon. Daenerys and advisor Tyrion appear to be making full use of Stannis’ strategic battle map. Other shots in the trailer featuring Dothraki soldiers and dragons suggest that the Khaleesi is well equipped to dislodge Cersei from the Iron Throne.

Winter is most definitely coming

The Starks were right, it looks as though a chill is setting in. Brief shots of Arya (Maisie Williams) show her in a woods as her breath forms a chilly mist. There are also brief flashes of wildlings running in the snow, as well as Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington ) – suggesting the Night’s King and his army of the undead will continue to advance and threaten Westeros. As ever, it seems Davos (Liam Cunningham) and Jon Snow are the only ones fully aware of the threat this poses – with the former issuing a stern warning early in the trailer.

Little Finger is still stirring for rebellion

It appears Little Finger - real name Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen) - is up to his old tricks of whispering conspiracies into people’s ears. He is shown telling Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) that her brothers and father are dead – could he be encouraging her to overthrow half-brother Jon as the newly proclaimed King of the North? Either way, it looks as though Jon is less than impressed when he pins the former Master of Coin to a wall.

Given that Baelish is a master manipulator however, it’s likely that his game plan is a little more complex.

Frankenmountain is still about

Everyone’s favourite reanimated corpse is still alive (sort of) and kicking. Ser Gregor Clegane, also known as the Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson), suffered a painful death when he was poisoned by Oberyn Martell’s spear a couple of season ago. He was brought back to life by disgraced maester, Qyburn, and soon became Cersei's loyal, and very creepy, protector. From the trailer, it looks as though he is still enjoying the employment of the scheming queen.

Arya is on the hunt

After her brilliant face-changing assassination of Walder Frey and his heirs in the last series, it looks as though Arya is set to continue striking names off her kill-list. However, could the supernatural stand in her way?

It also seems, given her frosty surroundings, that Arya could be heading north. Perhaps she is travelling to be reunited with her known surviving siblings, Sansa and Jon. Little is seen of Bran in the trailer, suggesting his plotline might be taking a backseat this series – which isn’t unprecedented. One thing is for certain, if she is northbound, she is also heading straight into the path of the White Walkers.

Is that Jorah’s arm?

Another fleeting shot is of a withered arm reaching through a hatch – could that be Jorah Mormont’s arm, ravaged by greyscale? The loyal(ish) advisor to Daenerys contracted the disease rescuing Tyrion when they came under attack from rabid greyscale sufferers. After being reconciled with the Dragon Queen, he was sent away to find a cure and hasn’t been seen or heard of since. Perhaps Jorah could be making progress.
