Mobile phones are now banned in schools
The Council of Ministers approved the promulgation of the Education (Control and Use of Personal Mobile Devices on School Premises) Regulations 2026 on Friday, July 17.

This legislation establishes a comprehensive legal framework to regulate the possession and use of personal mobile devices within all primary and secondary schools. The stated objective of the authorities is to strengthen discipline, protect the well-being of students, and optimize academic performance. From now on, the use of mobile phones by students is prohibited on school premises without prior authorization.

Students are permitted to bring their devices only if they remain in silent mode and securely stored throughout the school day. Limited exceptions apply for medical reasons or if a teacher specifically authorizes the use of the device for educational purposes.

The new regulations also apply to both teaching and non-teaching staff. They must refrain from using their personal mobile phones in the presence of students, except for essential teaching purposes or in the course of their official duties. Furthermore, the regulations include a parental responsibility clause. In cases of repeated violations, the parents or guardians responsible will be formally notified and required to come to the school to retrieve the confiscated devices.
