About 100 health professionals from the public and private sectors will meet in Trianon on Thursday for a workshop to mark World Health Day.

This initiative from the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life aims to sensitise health professionals, pharmacists and nurses on the policies and practices needed to prevent and counter the emergence of highly resistant micro-organisms.

The ministry will also start a TV and radio campaign targeting the general public, pharmacists and health professionals. According to the World Health Organisation, everyone who uses, prescribes, or administers antibiotics and other antimicrobials has a role to play in the important work of preserving them for future generations.

Patients and the general public therefore need to understand that antibiotics are only effective against and not against viral infections such as influenza and the common cold.

In order to contain resistance and ensure the effectiveness of medicines for the future, health practitioners need to be disciplined in their prescription, sale and distribution of medicines, while hospital administrators and health managers need to set clear rules for the use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines.
