10% of Land to be Made into Parks
The Ministry of Agro Industry and Food Security has announced their vision to ensure that at least 10 per cent of the land is transformed into natural parks.

“We want to create new parks, reintroduce endemic plants, control the invasive alien species and maintain and enhance Mauritian terrestrial ecosystems,” said the minister Satish Faugoo to The Independent.

He added that this cannot be done immediately.

“This project will span over a period of five years. We are collaborating with the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Development Programme which will provide Rs 50 million funding to the project,” he said.

Faugoo highlighted that the idea behind this is to conserve and protect the biodiversity and to ensure that at least part of the island find its original state.

“We want to restore native forests thus protecting the natural habitats of plants and animals through sustainable management and conservation measures,” he said.
