Taking on a New Responsibility? Do It Smartly
Layoffs and cutbacks are forcing more people to take on new responsibilities. Whether you are excited about new challenges you face or feel you have no choice but to say "yes," use these three tips when starting something new:
  • Don't simply do a "hand off." If you have access to the person who handled the job before you, interview her. Find out as much as you can about what's required of you.
  • Look for overlap. Chances are you are already doing tasks similar to the new ones you've just taken on. Whenever possible, look for opportunities to kill two birds with one stone.
  • Delegate. Take apart the new responsibility and figure out which components can be delegated to someone who will do them better. This isn't off-loading responsibility, it's good management.
