Landslide: Hundred Houses in Country Threatened

Over a hundred houses are in danger in many parts of the country, because of possible landslides. Indeed, thirty-seven locations were identified as vulnerable to landslides, but for now there are mainly three areas of concern to the authorities, including the Quatre-Sœurs, Chitrakoot and Vallée-Pitot in Port Louis.

These places have been listed in the following significant damage reported after the season of heavy rains.

It is through the help of a consulting geotechnical, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the government has identified these areas at risk and act accordingly.

Regarding Chitrakoot and Quatre-Sœurs, the authorities plan to relocate some residents.

The people of Quatre-Sœurs will be relocated to Camp-Ithier while others will have to wait a bit to be resettled on plots which will soon be identified by the Ministry of Lands and Housing.

According to JICA, it is not recommended that families continue to live in high-risk areas and put their lives in danger.

Note that in 1996, following a study by Japanese experts, works very large has been undertaken on the side of Signal Mountain, specifically at the back of La Butte to retain the landslide.

To recap, the landslide is a geological phenomenon where a mass of earth down a slope.

After setting in motion the mass retains its consistency and overall appearance. It is always recognizable, allowing to differentiate mudslides that have no real shape.
