Ministry to Start Building Two Eco Villages

Environmental sustainability will be the main focus of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development this year.

It will be going forward with the construction of two eco villages at Pointe aux Piments and Panchavati.

To recall, nine villages, including Pointe aux Piments, Panchavati, Vieux Grand Port, Vuillemin, La Gaulette / Le Morne, Poudre d’Or, Clémencia, Souillac and Rivière Coco in Rodrigues were initially chosen for this project, which should have started in February 2011. A sum of Rs 30 million was earmarked for it.

“We want to change the concept of villages through this project. It aims at sustaining the tourism industry, creating green jobs, improving quality of life while preserving natural resources and facilitating community self-reliance,” said the minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Deva Virahsawmy.

It also comprises upgrading the physical environment, promotion of waste segregation, use of renewable energy for lighting and heating purposes and protection and conservation of biodiversity. “The blueprint of the project was being prepared by the ministry since last year,” he said.
