Mauritius’ second largest tuna processor Ireland Blyth Limited (IBL), which is merging its tuna plant in with Mitsubishi-owned Princes, attributed a drop in its annual tuna earnings to a market made tougher by EU trade with Thailand.

The European Union Council of Ministers has ratified Protocol between the European Union and the Republic of Mauritius at its ECOFIN session. This is part of definitive endorsement of its fisheries sector Partnership Agreement. Singed in February 2012, the final decision has not been taken until now due to legal differences.

CHINA IS opening its doors to seafood imports from Mauritius. Fisheries minister Nicholas Von Mally was in Beijing last week to sign an agreement on export licensing for Mauritian products — a pact that could see Chinese fishing fleets displace European boats in the waters of the Indian Ocean nation. Von Mally met Wu Qinghai, Deputy Director of China’s quarantine body, the General Administration of Quality Supervision (AQSIQ).
