APEIM is a leading NGO who is responsible for the education of children. They operate 10 schools across the island.
In Mauritius, special education for disabled people relies heavily on volunteerism. The support of organizations such as Standard Bank is therefore essential for the functioning of these centers.
St Luc center is one of 10 APEIM schools for differently able children, most of these children with autism.
The center located in Curepipe has been completely renovated by Standard Bank. The management team of the bank tells us that at the first visit to the center they were shocked by the its state.
The bank has supported the work to renovate classrooms and amenities. As part of its collaboration with APEIM, Standard Bank also donated classroom furniture to 10 schools. This furniture is adjustable and therefore more responsive to the needs of disabled people especially to people in wheelchairs.
Lakshman Bheenick, general manager of Standard Bank, said that the policy of the Standard Bank group, the first banking group in Africa is to be present in societies where it operates.
The bank also favors partnerships with NGOs rather than being solely a provider of money.
Lakshman Bheenick promised APEIM that this partnership will last and that Standard Bank will continue to support St Luc.
