On Wednesday, the raised plaza of the university was transformed into a voting centre.
As students were casting their votes, representatives of the parties were trying one last time to convince them to vote for their team.
By Thursday evening, 4,807 votes had been collected from the different faculties and departments of the university. The results are expected to be out by 2 pm on Friday.
The three parties taking part in the election include Student Power (SP), United Campus (UC) and United Student (US).
Each party has nine candidates involving four office bearers and five faculty representatives.
SP representative Navish Fokeerah stated that his team is working for the interest of the students.
“Student Power has implemented various projects such as WiFi on the campus and installation of water dispensers. This has been a clean campaign with no character assassination and the representatives of the other parties are friends,” said Fokeerah.
UC leader Divya Murugesan stated that the atmosphere is good and there is no problem with the opponents. “UC is a dedicated team striving for sincerity, discipline and professionalism,” she said.
Some of their proposals include online blackboard system, creation of student participative committee, reviewing of Student Union Constitution and removal of dissertation fees among others.
US representative Devesh Heeramun is also confident and expects some 2,000 votes.
However, he stressed that there is a lot of work that goes on behind elections.
In its manifesto, US is proposing setting up of broadband on campus, offering free printing facilities and more funds for needy students.
“If everyone cooperates, it will make a difference. It will help enhance the lives of the students,” he said.
