Bernard Gruson was conferred with the degree of Doctor of Civil Law at the University of Mauritius on Tuesday during the graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science and the SSR Medical College.
To recall, Gruson is the president of Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (Geneva Hospital University) (HUG) with which Mauritius signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in January.
“It is a moment of pride that I have been conferred this honour by the Republic of Mauritius and the University of Mauritius. “
The ambition of Mauritius to become a medical hub will be further strengthened in collaboration with HUG. We are already helping the local doctors to assist patients with gynecological problems and diseases related to breast and cervical cancer,” he said.
HUG will also help establish a prevention programme for cardiovascular diseases and share its knowledge and skills with Mauritian doctors in the field of cardiology.
According to him, the agreement with HUG also includes plastic and reconstructive surgery. This programme also includes training for doctors in Mauritius.
HUG will help Mauritius materialise the paediatric hospital project by providing technical help to the island. They will train local doctors in various fields to bring them in line with the latest developments taking place in the medical field.
“HUG will help develop a national prevention programme in the field of sports and food for children,” he said.
He added that the next big project is the setting up of a medical school at UoM.
