Despite the showers that swept the island during the weekend, Mare aux Vacoas reservoir has shown almost no improvement from its all time low water percentage.

The reservoir was at 31.4 per cent of its storage capacity on Monday, compared to 30.7 per cent on July 15.

This represents a 0.7 per cent improvement in its water level, and amounts to relatively nothing given its alarming condition.

Other reservoirs of the country such as Piton du Milieu and Midlands have been slightly better, from 70.9 and 78.5 per cent on Friday to 72.2 and 79 per cent on Monday respectively.

Water levels for the Hollyrood, Pierrefond, Yemen and Morcellement St André boreholes have however remained constant.

Mare aux Vacoas had registered 27 millimetres of rain during the weekend and Nouvelle Découverte 39 millimetres, which is the highest rainfall recorded for the weekend.

Philippe Veerabadren, forecaster at the Vacoas meteorological station, said that the rainfall levels recorded are within the range expected during winter in Mauritius.

“The weather is under influence of the peripheral winds associated to the anticyclone situated to the south-west of the island. This is what is causing the rains,” said the forecaster.

Speaking about Mare aux Vacoas’ dire need of heavy rainfall, he said that heavy showers are not expected soon, unless the anticyclone gets closer to Mauritius.
