On Tuesday, the family presentation Hansel & Gretel, presented by Opera Mauritius, debuted at the Serge Constantin Theatre, Vacoas.
Hansel & Gretel is a very well known fairytale particularly appreciated by children.
The Mauritian adaptation of this fairytale was quite a success and exceeded expectations.
For the first time in Mauritius, this play was sung in English with subtitles in French.
This fresh and innovative production of Hansel & Gretel, a classic German fairytale, was visually stimulating and full of soothing music. Children were charmed by the energy and powerful singing of the talented cast.
The main characters include Hansel, played by Sandrine Thomas-Herchenroder, Gretel played by Katrin Caine and the witch played by Joel Ramdoo,The role of their father was played by Paul Jhureea and Ingrid Ducasse was the mother.
The sandmen were played by Maxime Espitalier-Noël andEmmanuel Labauve d‘Arifat and the little dew fairy was Ophélie Espiègle.
Apart from the main cast, the children from the Opera Mauritius Children’s Choir were also part of the play. Hänsel und Gretel is an opera created in the 19th century by composer Engelbert Humperdinck (1854 – 1921), adapted from the Grimm’s fairytale.
The live performance is a great viewing experience for all audiences. People can view it as part of a family outing or discover a classic work with contemporary appeal.
