Sotravic Ltd and the Central Electricity Board (CEB) have struck a power purchase agreement for the CEB to buy 3MV of green electricity, which will be produced at Mare Chicose landfill grounds for the ‘Gas to Energy project’.

This is a first of a kind project to be realised at the national level. It makes a case for biogas that contributes to the reduction of greenhouse effect by reducing waste equivalent to around 668,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, stated Pierre Ah Sue, president of Sotravic ltd.

The landfill site, located in the Grand Port district was constructed from a previous landfill site in 1996. It started operations in 1997 when solid waste management systems had just been put into practice in Mauritius.

Sotravic and its partner Bilfinger Berger Group have been managing the site since 2006 and are the second private operators to have taken charge of the Mare Chicose landfill site. They will ensure the technical management of the site over a period of ten years. Being the only technical landfill site on the island, it treats its solid waste in totality.

The site covers 35 hectares and has a capacity of 3 million metres cube, which amounts to around 1,300 tonnes daily or 400,000 metric tonnes annually.
