After HSC: Multitude of Choices in Mauritius
After the Higher School Certificate, heading further studies based on their choice of subjects, his grades, his desires, and ambitions. Before embarking on this path, a phase of reflection is needed. Is this for me? Which institution to choose? What courses are offered?

Are all questions posed an aspiring student. The choices of study after the HSC are very varied. Apart from the choice of training that leads to a certain career, there are many other aspects to consider, such as the cost of education, find a course that suits you best or to get a place in the chosen institution. This paper is an update on the various institutions of higher education that exist in Mauritius as well as courses of study that are offered to help the young to make the best choice.

Higher education is provided in a variety of institutions and in various degrees. This also gives rise to a multitude of choices.

The tertiary sector in Mauritius has undergone significant changes since 1968, with the existence of a single institution, the University of Mauritius (UoM). Today, this sector is very diverse and includes some 74 institutions, public, private and regional, each with its own specificity.

In the public sector, higher education is provided at the UoM but also at the University of Technology Mauritius (UTM), the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI), the Rabindranath Tagore Institute (RTI) at the Open University of Mauritius (OUM) - formerly known as the Mauritius College of the Air - the Fashion and Design Institute and the University of the Mascarene Islands, recently created (the merger of the former polytechnics, the Swami Dayanand Institute of Management and the Institute Superior Technology).

Three institutions, the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD), the Mauritius Institute of Health (MIH) and the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE), also offer courses leading to a license. In addition, 64 private institutions are stored locally, offer courses ranging from certificate to PhD with certification bodies mostly based abroad (72 of 76). More information on the institutions and courses are also available on the Website of the Tertiary Education Commission, the body responsible for regulating higher education in Mauritius.

Public institutions

The UoM, the first institution of higher education, however, remains the most requested because of high cost of education affordable. With the growing number of students who wish to enroll each year, it increases its intake each academic year.

The University of Mauritius has five faculties offering a total of more than a hundred courses, including accounting, social sciences, engineering, and computer languages, leading to a certificate or license. The institution also collaborates with other institutions such as the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for more specialized training.

To be eligible for a course at UoM leading to a BA or BSc, a candidate must have a pass in English Language at the School Certificate and five Credits in other matters relating to the course chosen and Level 2 A for the HSC. The University of Mauritius also offers multidisciplinary courses. For example, a Joint Ba Humanities, which includes courses in French, English, history and many other subjects.

Multidisciplinarity is that courses allow you to study several subjects at once. These are licenses "Major / Minor" with a strong field and a secondary material at the UoM, only administrative costs are imposed. They can turn around Rs 14,400 per year, unless it is to complete his medical studies in Bordeaux. If tuition is free in France also, the student must find the money for his stay, including housing, which is expensive. Note that for studies of medicine, Belle Rive Medical College, which hosts the majority of foreign students, is also attached to the UoM, which accredits qualifications. The institution has recently received recognition from the Medical Board of California for the clinical training of doctors. It offers courses in MBBS. Courses can cost more than Rs 1.2 million for five years, apart from other administrative costs.

In the category of public institutions, found the University of Technology of Mauritius. However, unlike the UoM, which pay only the administrative costs, during the UTM are relatively more expensive: a student will have to pay Rs 22,300 per semester for a course of their choice. For the three years of study, it may amount to more than Rs 140,000.

Mauritian options

If a young person today seeking a license that does not bear the signature of a local institution, no need to go abroad. With the variety of institutions that offer courses accredited and recognized by foreign universities, the choice is more limited.

The Charles Telfair Institute (CTI) offers many courses in partnership with Curtin University of Technology in Australia, which explains the enthusiasm of young people for several years to pursue studies in this institution located in Moka. The course covers several areas, including marketing, commerce, accounting, communication and computing. For three years (Bachelor's Degree), students will have to pay 8150 dollars (Rs 252,650) at Curtin University and Rs 326,240 to the institution of Mauritius, is Rs 580,000 in total for a degree at CTI . However, studies in Australia would cost more than three million.

There are other such institutions offering courses in partnership with foreign universities, among others, Amity Institute of Higher Education, BSP School of Accountancy and Computing, ACCA Mauritius, the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce Institute The EIILM University (Mauritian Branch Campus), School of Medicine Louis Pasteur, JSS Academy, Middlesex University Campus and Mauritian ISITECH Business School. For these private institutions, courses do not cost less than Rs 300,000 per academic year.

Distance learning

Many young people after HSC do not wish to engage in full-time studies for a minimum of three years. However, they can opt for Distance Learning. This allows the aspiring student to work while pursuing his studies.

The courses that are offered are as varied as those proposed in a university full time. For many years, one of the first private institutions to offer this type of training, UNISA, University of South Africa, is also still popular today. It offers courses in several areas ranging from trade languages. The student will complete 32 modules to a maximum of eight years to get a bachelor degree from UNISA. These distance learning courses can cost about Rs 350,000.

With regard to distance learning, the Open University of Mauritius, formerly known as the Mauritius College of the Air, was added to the list. It will welcome its first students in February. Regarding the tuitions fees, they are relatively cheaper than other institutions, about 60% less. In addition to the local institutions, the Open University of Mauritius will be asked to collaborate with other foreign universities, including the Indira Gandhi National Open University, the Open University of UK, the African Council for Distance Education and UNISA. For the first year, among other courses are offered in Economics (Finance and Taxation), management, humanities, languages.

At the conquest of overseas

Although Mauritius now offers a wide range of choices of institutions for higher education, many aspire, once the HSC pocket, leaving Mauritius abroad. For years, Europe, specifically England and France, was popular. Today, it is Asia that is coveted because of the international recognition of diplomas. In addition, British and Australian universities have opened campuses in Malaysia where similar programs are 50% cheaper.

China is another destination that attracts young people to study medicine. These foreign universities are represented in Mauritius by several registered organizations, including the Overseas Education Centre, and Malaysian IDP Education Co Ltd.

Young people should be wary of some institutions that are in no way qualified to recruit students. The list of those registered in due form is available from the Department. Within a month, about the above institutions, public or private, will hold their annual open house for aspiring students. This is an opportunity for them to inquire further about the opportunities that are available and apply to an institution of their choice.
