The project will probably start in September and important infrastructural changes are foreseen in the coming months in the region where the dam will be built. The dam, costing 2.6 billion rupees, will cover 140 ha of land and will be built on the Terre Rouge River. It will have a storage capacity of 14 million cubic metres of water.
The contract for a detailed plan of the project was allocated in February 2009 which was completed in 2010 and a series of tests on the quality of the soil where the dam is to be constructed were undertaken from September 2009.
The Environment Impact Assessment was completed in December 2010 and the tender was launched in December. The deadline for submissions is March 7.
The new dam will be used to mobilise additional resources for water and ensure a regular supply of drinking water in these areas until 2050. The dam will also help increase water reserves for irrigation purposes.
