Minister Showkutally Soodhun said there are currently three tankers which supply the island with petroleum products which are imported from Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd in India.
“A third tanker has been added recently to the existing fleet because, following the high risks of tankers being pirated off the coast of East Africa, Mauritius might find herself in a position where there are no petroleum products available.”
According to Mr Soodhun, the country gets a tanker of petroleum products every 20 days which supplies fuel for 30 days which explains why the country has extra supplies for only 10 days.
Mr Soodhun had a working session with all stakeholders of the petrol distribution system including the chairman of the State Trading Corporation (STC), Mr Megh Pillay, to discuss ways in which the current petrol storage capacity can be maximised.
He added that only 10 out of the 140 petrol stations on the island did not receive supplies and were not able to serve their customers.
