McDonald’s at Phoenix open

There was no opening ceremony and Robert Chane, head of this franchise in Mauritius, was present to see how well the restaurant was working

The McDonald’s restaurant outlet at Phoenix, which is at the centre of a feud with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), officially opened on Saturday despite a court case pendingin the Supreme Court against Ascentia Ltd, the owner of McDonalds Restaurants here

This restaurant is more modern than that of Port Louis. Special arrangements have been made to do away with odour that may disturb those in the surrounding areas. McDonald’s is employing 50 people and can accommodate about 250 customers.

ISKCON is contesting the opening of the restaurant in front of the site proposed for the construction of a temple on Hare Krishna land because the Hindu religious society is purely vegetarian. Several documents and affidavits were submitted to court last month by the Municipality of Vacoas/Phoenix and the promoters of McDonalds Restaurants.

Srinjay Das, secretary and public relations officer of ISKCON, refused to comment and said that ISCKON will be holding a press conference on March 15 to give their point of view on this matter.
