The clinic hopes to be able to welcome patients from around the Indian Ocean in the near future

“The clinic’s goal is to take medical excellence to the next level,” said Dr Simmardeep Singh Gill, who was recently appointed as the new chief operating officer at Fortis Clinic Darné.

The new department will be headed by urologist Dr Balbir Verma.

“Until recently, the clinic’s renal sciences department could only oversee conventional diagnosis and treatment, but this upgrade will bring in revolutionary changes in the way we deal with kidney problems,” explained Dr Gill.

The clinic will also invest in the requisite equipment for better diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from renal disorders..

Dr Verma, who specialises in non-invasive surgery and laparoscopy procedures, will be working closely with nephrologist Dr Mohammud Hussien Nanhuck to develop a kidney transplant programme.

“It is alarming to note that Mauritians with either diabetes, hypertension or at risk of developing kidney diseases contribute to 53.2 per cent of the population, according to the 2009 Mauritius Non-Communicable Diseases Survey. The country needs a specialised centre for high-end treatment in this field,” Dr Verma said.

Concerning minimally invasive urology (knifeless or key hole surgeries), which he will be practising at Fortis Clinic Darné, Dr Verma said the clinic is able to perform about 90 per cent of all urologic abdominal surgeries using laparoscopic technology.

This includes the removal of kidney and prostate cancer and provides the same effect as traditional surgery.

“The benefits of laparoscopic surgery include much shorter hospital stay, shorter recuperation time and less pain. Because the incisions are small, scarring is minimal,” he said.

The clinic also hopes to be able to welcome patients from around the Indian Ocean in the near future.
