However, certain other vegetables like tomatoes have suffered due to he unpredictable weather. As a result the price of tomatoes has shot up and the vegetable is now being sold between Rs 60 and Rs 90 for half a kg.
According to a seller at the central market in Port Louis, there is a shortage of this vegetable because heavy rains that occurred in the previous weeks affected the plantations severely.
The consumers are also complaining about the rise in prices. Canned tomatoes are being sold between Rs 16 and 25.
Hence, this is being considered as a more affordable option than fresh ones.Kailash Ramdhary of the Small Planters Association, however, reassured that the tomatoes are not infected.Vegetables like zucchini, squash, peppers and tomatoes are anyway more are expensive than others. Ramdhary added that this is because these plants need more attention and care and often need treatment.
