The Royal Life Saving Society (Mauritius) is organising the annual Grand Baie-Pereybere 5-km swimming race on April 24.
According to the president of the of the Royal Life Saving Society, Dhiraj Dosieah, for the past 36 years, this race has been anchored in the calendar of activities of the Royal Life Society (Mauritius) and it has been a tradition to conduct the event in the month of April.
Dosieah added that the aim of organising this race is to sensitise people about water safety as too many people drown at sea.
“For festivals such as Ganga Snan, Easter, and so on, the concerned authority appeals to us to make sure that everything goes on smoothly. This activity is also organised to initiate pool swimmers into sea as they also face difficulty when swimming in sea,” said Dosieah. There will be a participation fee of Rs 100.
Dosieah added that not only Mauritians but also people from South Africa, Italy, Frand and Egypt will participate in the race. These will be aged between 7 to 76 years.
With Nando’s as the major sponsor of this event, they will be awarding prizes to the top 50 swimmers. A t-shirt, designed specially for this swimming race, will be given to all participants.
Mark Elsbury, managing director of Nando pointed out that Nando’s encourages its customers to have a healthy lifestyle. “We want Nando’s to be associated with sports and leisure. This swimming race is a first-time opportunity for them,” he said.
The registration of participants will take place on April 24 from 8.30 am at the Pereybere public beach .
