Make Mauritius' textiles an alternative to China's

Minister of Industry and Commerce seeks to develop Mauritius as an alternative to Asian economic giant China in the textile sector.

Showkutally Soodhun expressed his belief in the nation’s potential to attract international clientele banking on the price hikes in the Asian market.

“Until now India and China controlled the textile sector. However, things are changing. A rise in the cost of production of those two countries has proven to be beneficial for Mauritius,” he said.

“We should make the most of the situation to boost the textile industry in Mauritius. We should work together, leave behind the world economic crisis and seize opportunities which present themselves to us to reach superior levels,” the minister said speaking at a ceremony organised by CIEL textile to reward its best employees for year 2010 at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre on Saturday.

Soodhun added: “The government is aware of the stakes. In this vein, we are doing are best to protect the Mauritian textile industry.”

He also reassured that the recruitment of foreign workers was to avoid a shortage of workforce in the country.

“This is how we will be able to ensure our economic growth,” said the minister.

Soodhun added that the Mauritian textile industry is on the right path and it was a matter of time before it becomes as competitive as the major players.

However, he warned against resting “on our laurels”.

“We should work as a team and put our differences aside to reach excellence. That is when we will make strides and outshine our competitors in a time where the business climate is marked by uncertainties,” said Soodhun.

Speaking about Enterprise Mauritius, the minister said he took control of the parastatal body to make it more efficient.

“After the departure of the CEO, we will now reconstruct a productive team. I will make sure this company meets expectations,” Soodhun added.
