The finals of the 10th edition of the National Spelling Bee competition, organised by the English-Speaking Union (ESU), took place on Wednesday at the Curepipe Town Hall.
This was attended by Sharmilla Bhima, president of ESU, Craig White, public affairs officer of the United States of America and Sir Victor Glover, patron of the ESU.
Four students, namely Tisha Heera of Swami Vivekananda SSS (Form 1), Aisha Allymamod of Lady Ramgoolam SSS (Form 2), Priayanka Jahul of Loreto College Quatre Bornes (Form 3) and Shivangi Misra of Hindu Girls’ College (Form 4) were declared winners.
To recall, 540 participants took part in the 10th edition of the National Spelling Bee which started on May 5. Ten participants from each class, namely Form 1, II, III and IV competed during the finals.
“The spelling bee competition is an important feature in our activities and we are extremely encouraged by the fact that the number of participants for this competition has steadily risen since its launch in 2002,” said Bhima.
She added that the growing participation is a sign that all the actors within the educational field recognise the value underpinning the competition.
Through this competition, the ESU aims at helping students improve their spelling, learn concepts and develop the use of English.
