Think Mauritius, a group led by Kumara Venkatasawmy has proposed to introduce a well defined tariff system to discourage wastage of water in a press meet on Wednesday.
Venkatasawmy believes that it will help sensitise people to rationalise the consumption of water.
He said, “The concerned authority must undertake studies to determine the volume of water used by the average family. It is only then that the new tariffs can be determined and find the right formula”.
Think Mauritius criticised the overall water management.
The spokesperson of the group said that it is sad that there is no merit system in Mauritius.
“In general, political nominees are appointed as the head in various institutions and most of the time, they lack the necessary skills and aptitudes to head bodies such as Central Water Authority (CWA)”.
He added, “It is now that the CWA is trying to reorganise itself when the situation has reached an alarming proportion. We hope that the experts from Singapore will be able to inculcate a sense of professionalism at the CWA. It is only then that we will be able to find a solution to the problem of water scarcity which is
affecting the whole population”.
Think Mauritius has suggested several measures such as the construction of proper infrastructure, exploitation of underground water, desalination of sea water as well as the canalisation of water.
