In a bid to create an Intelligent Mauritius, the installation of Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) networks across Mauritius and Rodrigues is expected to become a reality by November. The Cabinet has already agreed to the project and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is currently preparing the tender exercise.
This project is in line with the government programme to make Internet a citizen’s right.
In the first phase of the project, the base transmission stations to provide WiFi service will be installed on the premises of the five municipal councils, four district councils and the administrative building in Rodrigues.
This project remains high on the agenda of ICT minister Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum. “We have identified specific places as it is presently a pilot project. We are now waiting for the municipal councils and district councils to inform us where the base transmission stations can be placed,” he said.
If everything goes as planned, the WiFi zones will be extended to other places namely schools, public buildings, shopping malls, government offices, bus stations and beaches. Internet access is already available in 103 post offices, primary and secondary schools, two universities, women and youth centres.
The setting up of 150 computer clubs in social welfare centres and day care centres is also in the pipeline to further democratise access to ICT.
“It will be a pleasure to see youngsters as well as adults sitting around with their laptops connected to the world. We are also taking into consideration those who do not have laptops. Operators will be requested to install 5 to 10 PCs to enable others to benefit from the Internet,” added the minister.
