The Rivière des Anguilles dam project is progressing. A call for the tender of the Rivière Des Anguilles dam has been launched.

The authorities also have to carry out studies with regards to the design of this project and also for the installation of pipes.

This is a project to address the lack of water in the southern, south-eastern and south-west region.

These regions are densely populated, with most people residing in areas like Chemin Grenier, Souillac, Rose Belle, Plaine Magnien and Mahebourg. Authorities are looking for sponsors to fund the project, which will cost about Rs 2.5 billion.

Unlike the Bagatelle Dam, the Rivière des Anguilles dam will be built of stone, similar to the Midlands Dam.

The material will come from Mt Jurançon in Surinam. The storage capacity will be 14 million cubic metres.

The dam will be 55 metres (height) and will cover an area of 135 hectares.

With this new infrastructure, the production of drinking water will increase from 78,000 cubic metres per day to 128,000 cubic metres per day.

The water tank will be used for irrigation and domestic needs as well as in tourist and commercial sectors.

By building several dams across the island, including the Bagatelle Dam, Rivière du Poste Dam and Rivière des Anguilles dam, the government is determined to address the issue of water cuts, which have been severe during the last one year due to drought.
