Replying to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Stéphanie Anquetil on the status of the construction of the new Airports of Mauritius Ltd (AML), Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam stated that the main objective of the construction of a new terminal at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is to provide a modern feel and to position it as a hub in the region.

“Works on site at SSR International Airport started on March 30. So far, 41 per cent of the project has been completed. Concrete works on the new passenger terminal are 90 per cent complete and curtain walls and glazing installations are already visible on site. Two new aircraft parking stands have been completed and already handed over to AML. The overall apron construction is 60 per cent complete,” he said.

“The completion date for construction works was scheduled for September next year. However, the contractor has been granted a three-month extension in view of the fact that additional works were identified following sub-surface soil investigations, which revealed the presence of caves at the construction site. It must be pointed out that these additional works will not impact the project cost. The project is now expected to be completed by December 2012 and will be operational by early 2013,” added the PM.

Following a tendering exercise, the contract was awarded to the firm China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd on December 30, 2009 .
