Fifty recruiters of foreign workers operate illegally in Mauritius. So says the Minister of Labour wants to bring order in this sector. " For too long it lasts. We can no longer tolerate slavery. We must bring order and regulate recruiters , "said Shakeel Mohamed. It turns out that many workers into debt to pay commission to agents in order to come to work in Mauritius.
Among the amendments to the laws to be proposed, there are the more stringent criteria for licensing. The recruiter must submit Rs 500 000 as a deposit to the Department of Labour for this permit. The amount repaid to the recruiters will also be monitored.
The union Faisal Beegun Ally welcomes the initiative of Minister to amend laws for foreign workers. However, he doubts that the amendments changed the lives of these workers.
He argues that the tightening of the law will not prevent recruiters " selling dreams to workers before they arrive in Mauritius . "
" I wish all the shenanigans around the recruitment dissipate and that there is a respect for foreign workers. The best would be an agreement between the countries from which workers and Maurice , "said he.
He added that foreign workers should have the right to express themselves without fear the risk of deportation.
