Following South Africa Far East (SAFE) and Lower Indian Ocean Network (LION1), Mauritius is looking to set up its next fibre optic cable, Seacom.
This project is in line with the government‘s policy to make Mauritius a knowledge economy and to bridge the digital divide in the country.
The minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum underlined that a new submarine fibre optic cable will help position Mauritius on the international map.
Chedumbrum added, “Mauritius Telecom has already invested in the SAFE consortium and LION 2, which involves other operators is also underway. Previously, we had only one cable and witnessed several interruptions causing serious damages. However, we are now looking for the opportunity to build a consortium with Seacom to enhance connectivity.”
Additional submarine networks will help provide Mauritius with high-speed Internet connection and consequently contribute to the overall development of the economy.
