Wastewater from the WWMA Threaten the Marine Eco
The marine environment in Baie du Tombeau has greatly deteriorated. Main cause: the dumping of sewage into the sea Waste Water Management Authority is accused of violating environmental standards. The oceanographer Vassen Kaupaymootoo shot a video to warn the authorities.

Baie du Tombeau is in the red. The waters are polluted. The oceanographer Vassen Kaupaymootoo was alerted to this and with fishermen in the region, it has made samples. The source of this pollution: the toxic waste through the pipes of the Waste Water Management Authority (WWMA). Indeed, the ocean current carries the flow of toxic waste to the coastal areas of the Baie du Tombeau to Pointe-aux-Sables.

These wastes pose a danger to the environment. Samples taken by the oceanographer Vassen Kaupaymootoo show that heavy metals, bacteria and other toxic substances abound. A video produced in the Baie du Tombeau wastewater shows that lie at the bottom of the ocean . This video is also available on Youtube.

Vassen Kaupaymootoo stresses that the body of wastewater management uses subterfuge to continue to operate. "The WWMA has a duty to stop dumping sewage. There is no standard to evaluate and limit the risks associated with toxic waste, " noted oceanographer.

"All waste washed into sewers based in this region of the island. Coliform bacteria and proliferate at the bottom of the ocean. This can be harmful to the marine ecosystem. The risk of contamination is real, " says the environmental expert.

A commission to investigate waste water in 1997, concluded that the Mauritius Ports Authority and WWMA polluting the sea between Baie du Tombeau to Pointe-aux-Sables. " We must implement the recommendations of this report which accused both agencies of the state of pollution. It must first be the Ministry of Environment to issue a Stop Order against the Waste Water Management Authority. The second step is to bring the institution to clean the area, " said Vassen Kaupaymootoo. Fishermen and individuals have alerted the authorities of this ongoing situation.

The Waste Water Management Authority was informed of this matter. But the official communication of the organization claims not to know.

The Ministry of Environment was also informed of the case. A copy of the video was sent to the minister, Deva Virahsawmy.
