Food Security Strategic Plan 2013-2015, Rs 154 Million for the Implementation of New Projects

A sum of Rs 154 million will be injected into projects identified under the Fund's strategic plan for food security for the period 2013-2015 prepared by the Ministry of Agro-Industry in collaboration with the Agricultural Research and Extension Unit.

Some are maintaining and increasing production of vegetables (potato, onion, garlic), rice, beans and corn, the construction of two other models dairy farms in the east and north of the island , and a production of about 2,300 tons of meat by 2015.

The Fund's strategic plan for food security for the period 2013-2015 will also affect the allocation of additional land for crop production, the mechanical preparation of land allocated to food crops, the development of drainage system, facilities for irrigation and other agricultural infrastructure, the provision of incentives to farmers for the production of quality seeds and introduction and expansion of new strains of fungi that can be exploited commercially. A model home button mushrooms will be set up for demonstration agro-entrepreneurs.

Is also expected to create five orchards models in five different regions for mango, atte the Atemoya the jackfruit, breadfruit, avocado, grapefruit, soursop, the bilimbi, among others. In addition, the department will encourage farmers to grow local starchy plants such as cassava, banana and breadfruit. It will also examine some incentives initiated under the Food Security Fund in order to meet the needs of the agricultural community. The training program for farmers on good agricultural practices will be consolidated.

For the production of venison, a new cutting room certified to meet the standards of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) will be created in the central slaughterhouse. Existing barns will also be upgraded according to the guidelines on good farming practices.

An Agricultural Production Marketing Information System (APMIS) will emerge to ensure better dissemination of information to the farming community. The ministry has also construct a National Wholesale Market, with all the necessary infrastructure for processing fruits and vegetables. This market will feature post-harvest facilities for resale to meet the existing legislation and agricultural and food standards.

Pesticide control program is also in the plan. Residue level of pesticides in fruits and vegetables in orchards will be monitored. A high rate of return planter residues concerned with good agricultural practices and orchard continuous monitoring.

According to the Ministry of Agro-industry, more than 90% of the activities listed in terms of food security policy of the Fund for the period covering 2008 to 2011 were implemented. Some measures were delayed in 2011 were completed in 2012. Among the main achievements, it is noted that food production has increased by 17% from 99,507 tonnes in 2007 to 116,000 tonnes in 2012, production of potatoes has also seen a 50% increase from 5367 tonnes in 2007 to 23 000 tonnes in 2012, representing about 95% self-sufficiency rate of 68% against 2007.
