The investment involves the purchase of two purse seiners - currently under construction in Vietnam - and the establishment of a processing unit of tuna caught in our waters. The objective is to increase the processing capacity of tuna from 9 000 to 30 000 tonnes per year in Mauritius.
These two new purse seiners freezers at -40 ° C benefit from new technical options foreshadowing a new series of ships to come. They will be added to the fleet of five Sapmer already tuna vessels operating in the Indian Ocean: Franche Terre, Manapany, Bernica, Dolomieu and Belouve.
Sapmer is present in Mauritius through Mascarene Sea, which operates a joint venture with Seafood Hub Ltd and Ireland Blyth Limited (IBL). It had started its operations in 2008 in Freeport, Mer Rouge.
Von-Mally: "The 'Seafood Hub has the wind in its sails"
The Minister of Fisheries Nicolas Von-Mally, welcomes the announcement Sapmer to make a huge investment in the 'Seafood Hub' in Mauritius. "This shows that our industry 'seafood' has the wind in its sails. It is also one of the pillars of our economy, "he said in a statement to Le Matinal. The Minister will say that the tuna in our waters Sapmer will in a few days. Christopher Talbot, General Manager of Sea Mascarene, for his part, said that the project is well underway.
Sea Mascarene specializes in two main activities. The first is to treat the product without having to be thawed then sold to consumers. The goal is to preserve the taste of fish. The second is to keep the product in a freezer at -40 ° C.
Sapmer vessels also fish other species of fish such as swordfish. During the first six months of 2012, Sapmer recorded a turnover of € 52 million against € 42.1 million in the same period in 2011. This growth in revenue is due to an increase in the sale of fresh tuna and lobster in Europe and other countries. It was in 1947 that three Reunion, Jean Chayel, Georges Michel and Raymond Latour, have established Sapmer.
