Good Governance: Mauritius On Top

Fifty-two countries competed in this classification . Mauritius is one of eight countries - with South Africa , Botswana , Cape Verde, Ghana , Namibia , Seychelles and Tunisia - which has never left the top rankings of IIAg since 2000. The IIAg 2013 shows that gap is widening between African countries . Maurice obtained this year, ten times higher than the scores Somalia , the worst performing countries in the IIAg . The IIAg 2013 evaluates the performance of each country in four categories of governance: security and rule of law , participation and human rights , sustainable economic development and human development.
" We commend the outstanding performance of Mauritius is always first . Mauritius is a model for Africa in terms of good governance. Mauritius ranks first in the category ' sustainable economic development ' . This category shall evaluate the favorable conditions for economic development , including good governance , the competitiveness of the business environment and the existence of strong infrastructure .
The IIAg 2013 shows that 94% of the continent's population - including Mauritius - now live in a country where the overall level of governance has improved since 2000. The remaining 6 % live in a country where the overall level of governance has deteriorated since 2000, including Madagascar , Eritrea, Guinea -Bissau , Somalia, Libya and Mali .
Liberia , Angola , Sierra Leone, Rwanda and Burundi , all coming from a long crisis , are at the top of the poster countries getting the best performance since 2000 . Two of these countries in particular, Angola and Rwanda , have significantly improved year after year . Indeed , the results of governance display lower scores in 2000 to achieve their best performance in 2012. Rwanda is found in 15th place and Angola in the 39th place to the overall level of governance.
" Neither the Afro- pessimism or Afro- optimism do justice to Africa today. It is time to make way for African- realism and demonstrate clarity on our continent. Certainly, we should acknowledge the progress made. But it also is important to be pragmatic about the challenges our continent faces " , said Mo Ibrahim , Chairman of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
Maurice gets his highest ranking in three categories , individual security , business environment and social protection ' ( 1 of 52) , and its worst ranking in the sub- category' parity ' (11th of 52) . Established in 2007, the IIAg is the most comprehensive set of quantitative data on the state of governance in Africa. Compiled in collaboration with experts from African institutions, the IIAg provides an annual assessment of the state of governance in 52 African countries.
