They also meet the social criteria, that is, coming from a family with an income not exceeding Rs 37,000 per month (16 scholarships) or not more than Rs 18,500 per month (8 scholarships). The criteria for these scholarships have in fact been revised after the increase in the minimum wage.
Scholarships based on social and merit criteria allow students to undertake studies in a public or private university in Mauritius or abroad. The amounts disbursed differ depending on the student’s choice. Those opting for a foreign university will be entitled to a sum of Rs 600,000 annually, All-Inclusive, for a maximum period of four years. However, they will not have a scholarship for a Post-Graduate Degree.
Those studying in Mauritius, in a public university, where studies are free, an annual allowance of Rs 150,000 will be granted to them, for a period of four years. Those opting for a private institution, will be entitled to Tuition Fees of up to Rs 225,000 annually, for four years. Considering the amount allocated, compared to those studying abroad, beneficiaries in Mauritius will also be supported for a first year of Master abroad or two years of Master in Mauritius.
An exception is made for beneficiaries studying medicine and related fields, in an institution recognized by the Higher Education Commission. They will then benefit from tuition fees of Rs 225,000 for a period of five years.
The only problem is that the scholarships are awarded when the academic year has already started in Mauritius and abroad. One of the conditions, moreover, was to have already obtained a place in a university institution.
