Most of the beach hawkers, around 60 of them, will meet tonight to decide on their next step after the Beach Authority implemented new regulations preventing vehicles driving on the beaches.

The spokesperson of the beach hawkers, Mr Georges Ah Yan, told NEWSNOW yesterday that these beach hawkers have decided to launch a hunger strike.

“Only after the meeting will we know whether we will hold a demonstration in front of the HQ of the Beach Authority and then start a hunger strike – or rather to start a hunger strike straight away,” he said.

He explained that with the new measures, most beach hawkers have to market their products by staying at a fixed place, very often at a parking area far away from the beaches.

Their sales have been hit, he said. Mr Ah Yan criticised the authorities for “ignoring our requests and letters to consider the plight of the beach hawkers.
