The Mauritius Sugar Authority (MSA) has approved the closure of Union Saint Aubin sugar factory located at Riviere des Anguilles. The Ministry of Agro-Industry will now decide how to proceed with the recommendations of the MSA.
The Multi-Annual Adaptation Strategy (MAAS) which was adopted as part of the reform of the sugar industry advocates the centralisation of the sugar factory at La Baraque. The Union Saint Aubin no longer functions as a full-fledge factory. It manufactures syrups which are converted into sugar at La Baraque, Omnicane factory. Substantial investments were made to increase the crushing capacity of sugarcane from the factory area of Union Saint Aubin.
Once the government approves the recommendations of the MSA, the Union Saint Aubin employees will be qualified for transfer or premature retirement. They will be entitled to compensation and a plot of land.
