The CCTV in Port Louis is ready by May

The closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in various strategic spots in Port Louis in a bid to fight crime are presently out of service.

These cameras were initially supposed to start by January but will now become operational in May, said senior officials from the Line Barracks. They added that the delay was caused by technical problems such as the recent thunderstorms.

The CCTV system remains operational in other regions such as Grand Baie, Quatre Bornes and Flic en Flac. The surveillance system falls under the supervision of the police communication department.

Meanwhile, tests are being carried out to ensure that the surveillance system is ready by May. A total of 271 cameras have been installed in Port Louis. The CCTV system will be a subject of concern at the National Assembly on Tuesday where Opposition MPs Josique Radegonde and Kavi Ramano will question the PM on the same.

Radegonde will quiz the PM over the Flic en Flac CCTV system as she believes that some images cannot be properly captured by the CCTV system installed there due to the presence of trees and inadequate street lighting.
