Mr Sellatan Rama Nathan made history on Saturday as he became the first Singapore president to make a State visit to Mauritius. His visit is considered extremely important as the government strives to modernise the country and find longterm solutions to major problems such as traffic congestion and water problems.

The Mauritian government has increasingly been turning to Singapore to find ways to modernise its Civil Service. The State visit is also expected to strengthen the ties between the two countries as they will sign MoUs during a business meet.

The Singapore president will be in Mauritius till Tuesday. He is accompanied by his wife, family members and a strong presidential delegation. Special arrangements were made in the hangar of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on Saturday.

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, Opposition Leader Paul Berenger, ministers, members of parliament and other dignitaries were all present to greet the president and first lady of Singapore as they arrived. At the end of all the formalities, which lasted about half an hour, Mr Nathan and his wife left for the Royal Palm Hotel in Grand Bay.

Mr Nathan was received by the Agro Industry and Food Security Minister Satish Faugoo yesterday at the SSR Botanic Garden in Pamplemousses. The Singapore president laid a wreath at the “Samadhi” of the former prime minister Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.

Mr Nathan then paid a courtesy call on the Mauritian President, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, at the State House. He then left for Clarisse House where he had a “working meeting” with Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam.

“Not now. I will make a statement later,” Dr Ramgoolam told the press after the meeting. The Singapore president and his delegation headed once more to State House in Reduit for a lunch hosted by Sir Anerood.

Mr Nathan also attended a dinner at the Grand Mauritius Resort, Balaclava hosted by the Singapore Business Federation and the Standard Chartered Bank.

Today the president will participate in a business meet at the Meridien Hotel in Balaclava. The Singapore Business Federation will also sign two MoUs with the Board of Investment and the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

After attending the business meet, Mr Nathan and his wife will leave for Ganga Talao at Grand Bassin. The presidential couple will then have lunch at La Rote du The Restaurant in Bois Cheri.

The president’s third day in Mauritius will also be marked by two courtesy calls, from the Chief Justice Bernard Sik Yuen and Mr Berenger. The president will then leave for the Swami Vivekananda Convention Centre for a banquet hosted by the prime minister.
