The Ministry of Health and Quality of Life has a vision to adopt ICT in the health sector.
Electronic health information is fundamental for better health service delivery, planning and protection of privacy, which is otherwise impossible with paper-based records.
In line with this, the setting up of the e-health system has been planned for the third quarter of 2012.
Minister Maya Hanoomanjee is counting on the implementation of the e-health system to cut down on the losses that the state incurs every year due to the health sector. According to her, Rs 8 million goes to waste annually because of drugs unfit for consumption.
“We need to have a computerised system to ensure better inventory of drugs,’’ she said.
The minister also announced the upcoming construction of a modern warehouse at La Tour Koenig to store various imported products.
She added that according to the recommendations of the National ICT Strategic Plan 2007-2011, her ministry has already prepared an e-health plan.
“The plan defines ICT strategies to improve work processes and lay emphasis on productivity, quality and service delivery,” said the minister.
She highlighted that health care is the world’s most information intensive industry and that every day the industry produces massive volumes of data which, properly used, can improve clinical practice and outcomes, guide planning and resource allocation and enhance accountability.
“We cannot leap forward in health care quality and efficiency without high quality, user-friendly health information compiled and delivered electronically,” she said.
The objectives of the e-health system are to improve clinical outcome through better client-centric service delivery, improve health awareness levels among citizens and to enhance competency levels of health care staff at all levels and across organisations.
This e-health project will also be an eco-friendly one as there will not be any paper-based medical records.
Everything will be computerised. Patients may soon find themselves with electronic health cards.
Medical record leads to high volume of paper and a lot of time is wasted in retrieving a patient’s file.
