Printing sector is facing difficulties in Mauritius

“Although the printing sector has the potential to become a pillar of the economy, there is a lack of initiative.”

The small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the printing sector are facing difficulties, despite several appeals made to the authorities concerned.

Commenting on this, president of the Association of Printers, Allan Driver, who is also responsible for the printing company Alfran in Riche Terre, said, “Although the printing sector has the potential to become a pillar of the economy, there is a lack of initiative.”

He added, “The future is not bright. We have been facing a number of problems since 2010. There was talk of recession, but we did not feel the effects as we have been under strain since the last general election,” he added.

Driver said that many of his colleagues are suffering. The steadily rising price of raw materials is the main concern.
He deplored the fact that the printers cannot raise prices because of customers demand. “We are asked to cut down prices but we cannot do it, otherwise we will have to close our doors,” he said.

Driver said that many printers are in debt. He also stated that equipment is very expensive.

He added that he spoke to minister Michael Sik Yuen but nothing was done. “I don’t see the minister’s plan taking shape,” he said.

For this sector’s survival, Driver said that the Development Bank of Mauritius should provide support. “There should be low interest loans for SMEs,” he said.
