In the latest figures compiled by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for 2008, which concern 159 countries, Mauritius is ranked 72nd with an ICT Development Index (IDI) of 3.44. Sweden is in first position with an IDI of 7.85. Mauritius is second among the African countries after Seychelles which is ranked 66th.
This was revealed by the statistics for the ICT sector published by the Central Bureau of Statistics. These numbers demonstrate the presence of 139 large companies in this sector, representing an increase of 3.7 per cent. In 2009, the number was 134. Employment in these establishments grew by 3.8 per cent from 12,360 in 2009 to 12,826 in 2010.
In 2010, the value added at current prices generated by the ICT sector was Rs 17 billion, representing an increase of 14.1 per cent against Rs 15 billion in 2009. The real growth rate was 13.1 per cent as it was in 2009. In 2010, approximately 46 per cent of the value added of this sector was generated by the activities of telecommunications, 11 per cent in bulk and retail trade and 43 per cent for the remaining activities.
Regarding foreign trade, imports of ICT goods increased by 19.4 per cent from Rs 6 billion to Rs 7 billion in 2010 while imports of ICT services increased by 34.5 per cent from Rs 1 billion in 2009 to Rs 2 billion in 2010. The export of ICT products increased by 68.1 per cent from Rs 473 billion to Rs 795 billion in 2010. ICT services exports increased by 21.6 per cent from Rs 2 billion to Rs 3 billion for the same period.
The number of fixed lines increased by eight per cent from 375,200 in 2009 to 405,200 in 2010. The tele-density has increased 7.5 per cent. In 2009 it was 29.4 per cent and 31.6 per cent in 2010.
