This was donated by Heritage Resorts under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. Every month, the unit will recycle three tonnes of glass bottles and half a tonne of plastic bottles.
According to Elzette Balgobin, manager of Bel Ombre Foundation for Empowerment, “The project responds to the environmental and sustainable waste issues and is in line with the concept of Maurice Ile Durable. It aims to educate local residents and helps to make the environment green.”
Balgobin added, “Hotels in the region, including those of Heritage Resorts, Tamassa Resort, Moevenpick Hotels and Resorts, Shanti Maurice, A Nira Resort and Villas Valriche, are involved in sorting their waste and have agreed to provide it to Plankton.”
The aluminum cans and paper will be packed and sold by weight. Once the glasses are collected, they will be crushed and converted into polished glass.
“The project will provide employment to seven persons including a shipper, an operator and a supervisor. Initially, for the first two years, they will be supported by the foundation, which will provide their salary and will support the marketing of the project. Later, Plankton will become independent and even benefit the small community,” highlighted Balgobin.
The recycling unit project aims at keeping the environment green and clean.
